Biography —
Chamisa (she/her) is a citizen of the Navajo Nation, born for Blackfeet and Shoshone-Bannock. She is a developer, emerging computer scientist focused on ethically integrating Indigenous values into technology. Currently pursuing a degree in computer science at the University of Kansas, her research explores decentralized tools for Indigenous technological sovereignty, AI bias mitigation, and ethical AI/ML systems. Chamisa’s work is grounded in equity, social justice, and the intersection of Indigenous culture and technology, supported by a BA in Indigenous and American Indian Studies from Haskell Indian Nations University.
As a graduate researcher, Chamisa is developing an AI bias simulation tool and decentralized data management frameworks that empower Indigenous communities with tools aligned with community values and sovereignty. Her work integrates Indigenous knowledge ways into technological innovation, combining culturally relevant protocols with AI systems. She also collaborates on projects aimed at ethical technology design and expanding equitable participation in STEM fields, including outreach initiatives to inspire Indigenous youth to engage with AI and ML technologies.
Chamisa’s contributions span international forums, where she advocates for the inclusion of Indigenous protocols in global technology policies. Through her research and outreach, she aims to decolonize technology, foster a more inclusive STEM workforce, and ensure AI systems reflect and respect the diversity of human experience. By bridging traditional knowledge with technological innovation, Chamisa is amplifying Indigenous voices in shaping the future of technology.
