Biography

Hello! I'm Mikayla "MK" Kerron, an enrolled member of the Kitikiti'sh Tribe (Wichita & Affiliated Tribes) and a descendant of the Muscogee Creek and Makah Nations. I grew up in Southwest Oklahoma and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous and American Indian Studies from Haskell Indian Nations University in the fall of 2021.

After graduating, I had the privilege of working as an Environmental/GIS Technician in the Planning and Environmental Protection division at Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. There, I focused on educating the community and youth about the impacts of agricultural nonpoint source pollution on water and soil health, while also developing and implementing projects to reduce these effects.

As an Indigenous scholar, I’m passionate about weaving in traditional ecological knowledge practices with environmental restoration efforts to sustain/enhance cultural resources. Currently, I’m pursuing a Master of Science in Geography at the University of Kansas, where my research focuses on the effects of cultural fire on soil properties.
